The city of Esna within Luxor Governorate fell into decay and was forgotten by visitors after a new dam built in 1994 allowed for faster passage by cruise ships. Residents fled the area in search of employment, and the city center became dilapidated. USAID sought to put Esna and its rich cultural heritage back on the map with the design, implementation, and promotion of an alternative tourism development approach. This approach strikes a balance between heritage conservation, tourism, and local development needs. USAID and Takween partner with the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities, the Luxor Governorate, the Ministry of International Cooperation, and other public and private stakeholders to improve the economic benefit from tourism for the local community as well as engage community members to become part of the revitalization process. The activity promotes a new Esna ‘brand’ to highlight Esna's diverse heritage assets and increase potential for cultural tourism. This generates new job opportunities, increases revenues, and increases economic benefits for the community. Implementing Partner: Takween Integrated Community Development; Life of Project: October 2016 – September 2024.
